Statement of Faith
A couple years ago, I applied for a position as a director of education. One of the application questions asked me to write a statement of faith. I thought it was worth sharing here:
Our knowledge of God comes through His gracious revelation to us. He reveals Himself to us through many media: through sacraments (physical symbols of spiritual truths), the body of believers, and, primarily, His Holy Word. His Holy Word, the 66 books of the Bible, is inerrant Scripture, our foundation of truth about God and His universe, given to us through God-inspired writers throughout the last few millennia. Through the Bible, we learn that, after creating the universe, eternally existing God created man and woman perfect in His image (though Eve came a bit later, crafted from one of Adam’s ribs).
Through the sin of Adam and Eve, we are all stricken with sin and therefore death. However, God, through Mary’s virgin conception, sent Himself in the second person of the trinity, Jesus, to take upon himself the penalties for our inherited and enacted sins. Jesus, fully God and fully man, having lived a perfect life, by his death on the cross and resurrection from the tomb, has washed away death and now clothes those who merely cling to his saving grace in holiness.
This holiness in which believers are clothed reconciles our relationship with God, who, through His returned son, sends to us the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is He who now empowers us to live and live truly. The Holy Spirit dwells within us, giving us strength to replace our frailty, and it is by His power that we may spread God’s light to the ends of the earth for His ultimate glory.
