Brain Drain

I am trying to write a poem for my lovely wife, but I must — as I call it — Brain Drain first.

Brain Drain is the stretching of the mind and writing muscles. I devised this phrase when I taught Creative Writing as a small summer class. One of my students admitted that, though he disliked the exercise, it did help him write. So, now, I attempt the same exercise.

Usually, however, it's meant to be straight from the brain onto the page. I am feeling a little more collected than that.

I am also drinking vodka and tonic that my mind may also be loosened. Vodka to loosen and Brain Drain to warm up. It's a lovely parallel to typical exercise routines. Although, the tonic water is not quite what I had hoped. I really wanted orange juice, but we have none. I've been avoiding grocery shopping because we have so many food items that it wouldn't really make sense: cereal, eggs, bread, carrots, chicken, quinoa (which I spell by saying "kwi-no-uh" in my mind), almonds, all sorts of herbs and spices, beans (of the green persuasion), and really so many other things. It amuses me when Americans say, "We have nothing to eat." We are so petty. We are so fat – not always literally but at least in our minds. I don't know about you, but I have everything: endless water, endless food, a car, a computer, a phone, an iPad! I have a PS3! I have a super-hot wife. I have a part-time job with a boss who respects me. I have shelves full of books. I have matching dishes. I have a mattress and a box spring. I have way too many clothes. I have art hanging around my apartment. I HAVE A FREAKIN APARTMENT! I am currently drinking vodka. I have a plethora of games (board and video) and movies. So many things.

Even as much as I try to fret, I don't have that much debt. The average household has $15,000 of credit card debt – just credit cards! I only have about $5,000.

I often think of manna, real manna, the kind of manna that God used to feed His people as they wandered through the desert. It only lasted the one day. God says, "I will sustain you each day. Do not try to store up things as if you can sustain yourself by planning or storing or purchasing or investing."
Obviously, that's a bit of poetic license. Even so, God sustains us each day – one day at a time. There is no harm in investing – mathematically speaking. Invest away. Use your brains to maximize your resources. However, don't think your brains can sustain your life. Don't think your power feeds you or houses you. Manna: God saying, "I will sustain you day by day."

I don't have any strong thoughts on it, but I wonder about the mana that shows up in so many games. I assume there's a connection. I wonder how it went from daily bread to blue magic. Who knows?

I think it's time I set off to the poem for my lovely lady.

Thank you for your time, and to all a good night.

Signing off.
